Wedge Design
Coccyx
Description
Coccyx is a compact form drawn from the
anatomical memory of upright posture.
Inspired by the fused vertebrae at the base of
the spine, it reimagines this sequence not as
obsolete but as origin, a point where balance
and support converge. Through digital study
of posture and material density, the piece
turns compression into presence. Coccyx
becomes less a chair than a structural joint,
where motion settles and form holds.
Dimensions
550*502*878mm
Uses
- Interiors seeking statement objects
- Residential spaces that benefit from collectible design moments
Why it works?
Strong geometric language creates immediate spatial presence.
Additive manufacturing enables forms not achievable through conventional furniture making.
Pieces function as both seating or tables and as architectural objects within a room.
Material expression is raw, refined, and directional.
About Wedge Design
Wedge is a London based design studio founded by Peiyan Zou, Andy Zhang, and Lei Zhang. The practice works across furniture, installations, and architectural systems through an experimental approach rooted in material ecology, computation, and fabrication. Their pieces are developed through binder jet printing in quartz sand, then hand finished to reveal a raw, stone like surface. The result is a sculptural design language that feels at once geological, digital, and tactile.
Respecting Biodiversity
- Material systems that minimize reliance on resource intensive extraction.
- Reduced waste production compared to traditional subtractive fabrication.
- Design approach prioritizes long life cycles and spatial permanence.
Sustainability Details
Furniture produced through additive manufacturing processes that reduce material waste. Select pieces utilize sand based or mineral composite materials. Durability and longevity are central to the material strategy.
